We've just uploaded a brand new gadget to the gallery, [drum roll] Live Messenger! We're really excited about this gadget and really looking forward to people trying it out.
So, what does it do?
- See when your contacts sign on (optional notifications too)
- View your current list of active conversations
- View your unread email count
- View/Change your status
- Send preset messages to contacts/conversations
Most of all, this gadget allows you to have an online presence even when you're away from your PC. And, to make things even better we're releasing the gadget in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese and Korean!
So, head on over to the Windows Live Gallery to pick it up. We'll be improving the gadget over time and will of course be updating it as more features become available in the Windows Live Messenger API.
Have fun, people!

I'm trying to determine how this is better than the Windows Live Messenger IM that's already pre-installed on your phone? I realize it can be installed on other SideShow gadgets - but aren't those mostly...uh...PCs and laptops right now? Sorry, I'm just getting my feet wet with this whole SideShow concept, feel free to educate me. :)
email is sarahperez AT gmail dotcom
i am using messenger 8.5 on vista 64 bit , is this supported ?
i basically get "the service is unavailable message"
other gadgets are working normally
I'm also on Vista 64, using Messenger 8.5, it basically just tells me to sign in. Even though I am signed in on my PC...
This gadget simply crash when used with a Momento digital picture frame. I think you must query the capabilities of the target before sending information to it. Not all SideShow devices support bitmap, Momento is text and glance data capable only (still waiting for the next promised firmware).
How about the ability to read the incoming message?? I think that would make it alot better. Sure I like the fact that I can game, get a notification and send a reply like "brb ingame right now"... but I will still be curious of what they wrote
